If I remember correctly, Iterated Systems used to sell a hardware card to do
the compression stage at a fast speed.
Yeah, they had a PC card, but you could grind away through software.
The problem is that compression was much more expensive than
decompression. Most applications want symmetric costs on compression
and decompression. Only a few apps make sense for spending lots of
time on compression. I think the Encarta encyclopedia project from MS
used their compression, but that's the only big design win I can think
of for their solution.
Remember how the PNG format came about when Unisys enforced the compression
in the GIF format?
I think PNG was in preparation as a replacement for GIF before Unisys
started charging for the patent royalties, but that certainly
accelerated the work on PNG.
