PNG was invented in response to the GIF tax that was announced by
Unisys just after Christmas 1994. PNG was designed over the next
couple of months and was released pretty much in its current form in
early March 1995.

OK, it must be my fuzzy memory of various dissatisfactions with GIF
that predated PNG. Some of the things that PNG fixes are problems
that relate to GIF as a graphics format and not to the LZ related
compression patents.
