Hybrid solutions? Sure, there many already, disipyl, numpy, scipy.
For small applications Python or Java are ideal.
Python has Disipyl as scientific plotting and Visual Python for general
graphics.
Disipyl is very good.
When I last checked, Java3D was still struggling.
Java is stable and good for 2D.
Python is good that way, VisualP is a simple and fast 3D package.
I rather like the 3D graphics, space being 3D, pity Java has no good 3D.
As Roger Bagula says, it all depends.
