Catalyst Hosts Forum on Complexity and Transportation Policy June 15, 2006
Monday June 12, 11:34 am ET
WASHINGTON, June 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Grappling with the complexities of modernity? Facile solutions to intricate problems got you down? If you're a decision-maker suffering from these acute symptoms it may be time to ask your doctor about Complexity Science: a nascent, interdisciplinary field exploring the structure, behavior and dynamics of complex systems. Catalyst's "Forum on Complexity and Transportation Policy," to be held June 15th at the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC is the second of a four-part series exploring the new public policy insights offered by complexity science. Catalyst is pleased to feature two of the most highly esteemed individuals in the field of transportation policy today: Dr. Tom Downs and Dr. Carl Simon. Tapping deep into his well of experience, Dr. Downs will describe traditional policy frameworks, problem definitions, intervention strategies and funding mechanisms. Dr. Simon, to follow will discuss the difference the complexity perspective makes. His presentation will include references to a collaborative project underway with the researchers at Ford Motors, Sustainable Mobility and Accessibility Project, that utilizes complexity science techniques. The forum will be moderated by the renowned science author of Complexity: From Chaos to Order, Mitch Waldrop.

Our increasingly networked society is an elaborate patchwork of countless entities whose interactions often produce unexpected outcomes. As a result of this advancing environmental complexity, 21st century decision-making and effective policy design are formidable tasks. Fortunately, a new science is emerging that provides an entirely new conceptual and analytical framework for understanding these policy challenges. The Catalyst Institute for Applied Policy is an organization formed to address this changing dynamic and explore the possibilities complexity science offers in policy design and formulation. The Forum will introduce this science as an emerging interdisciplinary 21st Century tool that offers a novel approach to problem definition and gives rise to a deep well of creative and effective policy alternatives.
Catalyst invites all interested in the subject matter to join us for an intriguing foray into the realm where science intersects policy. The Forum will be held at the Cosmos Club, in the John Wesley Powell Room, from 1:00 to 3:30pm. There will also be ample time for audience interaction so please bring your most stimulating questions for the presenters. For more information please visit catalystdc.org or call (202) 265-8280.
