COMMERCE, TEXAS - The Mathematical Association of America, the influential organization for the advancement of mathematics with about 30,000 members, has awarded a Certificate of Meritorious Service to Dr. Stuart Anderson of Texas A&M University-Commerce.

The award was made in recognition of Anderson's service to the MAA at the national Joint Mathematics Meeting held earlier this month in New Orleans. He served the Texas Section of the MAA for nine years as the secretary-treasurer. Anderson often gives talks on math to area high schools and is sought after for speaking engagements, both on and off campus.

A 33-year veteran of the Department of Mathematics, Anderson received the award at the Joint Mathematics Meetings held with other mathematics organizations in New Orleans earlier this month.

"When a person becomes involved in MAA work, there is no intent of ever receiving an award. Luckily I never heard of the award until becoming fairly involved in the organization. That early ignorance helped to sweeten the surprise and did nothing to harm my sincere gratitude," says Anderson.

A member of the MAA since being "a starving graduate student," he says that as secretary he got to know people from all over the country "which opened doors for me."

His love of mathematics stems from his childhood, when he discovered he enjoyed solving puzzles. "Math is fun," he says. "Math is everywhere. I have met a doctor in mathematics from Berkley who is now working for Pixar Animation Studios handling the mathematics for "Toy Story" and other animated films and features."

Other MAA award winners included renowned mathematician Gilbert Strang of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and John Derbyshire, the best-selling author of "Prime Obsession" and "Unknown Quantity".

Anderson served as math department head from 1988 to 2003. In the '80s, he began studying the history of mathematics and has developed two undergraduate courses on this topic.

In the early '90s, he attended Boston University summer institutes on dynamical systems and later developed courses in this area.

He has worked closely with math students in Alpha Gamma Alpha, Pi Mu Epsilon, and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).

Anderson's other awards include the statewide Piper Professor, and the Barrus Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching, Sigma Xi Research Award, and Honors Professor of the Year, all from A&M-Commerce.

Anderson earned a bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of North Texas and a doctorate from the University of Oklahoma.

A Hunt County resident, Anderson is the father of two daughters who are teachers. Hillary teaches history and coaches at Florence and Jessica is a first grade teacher in Bastrop.

Anderson is currently serving on a planning committee to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the MAA in 2015.

"We are planning all sorts of wonderful things for the occasion," he says.
