The Australian Aborigines high science was sympathetic magic.
We know how that long sleep turned out...
They were few skinny naked peaceful and painted

The closest estimate of what Neanderthal like behavior might have been like
as modern humans.
It appears that that civilization that is least
pleasant gives those that dwell there in
incentive to make it better?
Some would want us to sit and wait for the death of our world peacefully
and then die in great numbers from
the resulting
flood, famine plague and war.
I think that knowing what is probable for our future,
we can at least try to save civilization as unpleasant as it may be.
At least leave better records than the Greeks and Romans did when they fell.
Well, it is possible that we are going to hell in a hand bucket, and
the best we can do is leave good records of our adventure. This might
explain why we have not yet made contact with extraterrestrial
civilizations: because very few can survive the technological era
without blowing themselves back to a cave-man era or poluting their
"nests" so badly that there are massive die-offs and it's back to the
cave-man era by that route.
However, it is also possible to imagine a scenrio wherein our
civilization slowly evolves from one largely based on ignorance, fear
and selfishness to one where reason and wisdom triumph. Surely some
civilizations make it through the technological era and develop a
stable governmental system based on enlightened self-interest and an
appreciation for the beauty of nature. The probability may be low, but
it is not zero. If enough people were to say: "we will not settle for
less!", we might actually succeed.
