Personally I try to be a good citizen of planet Earth, enjoying the
beauty and majesty of nature, encouraging others to adopt enlightened
self-interest, and watching as the grand pageant unfolds. I strongly
resist the temptation to fall into depression or cynicism.

Actually I was thinking of government works projects
like the Bolder Dam and Tennessee Valley project of the 1930's.
When we had "nothing to fear but fear itself", we managed to
pull together for the common good.
1) a project to protect out harbors and water courses from water level rises
2) a project to divert hurricanes to less populated coastal regions
3) a project to convert electric power production to non-fossil fuels
4) a project to convert transport of large quantities of goods from trucking to train or electric rail
transport.
5) a project to make civilian individual transport more efficient and less polluting
Most of these ideas don't involve new technology, but just delivery of older
ones at demand.
