Cavers have long theorized that 100 million years from now, boots, soles
and socks lost in sticky mud will form carbonized images on cave mud
derived shales.
Since the most distructive element around is oxygen,
and imprints of 'soft body parts' have survived 500 million years
already, (Edicaran fauna) I would think that ceramics and other
bone-like materials, some artificial stone and impression fossils would
quite possibly survive, even though refined metal and/or intact
buildings might indeed be toast. Pure copper? How old are native copper
deposits?
Once an object got into an anarobic environment, all bets are off,
considering that some trees (still wood) have been dated to tens of
thousands of years. Perhaps if some cataclysm turned all the tarmac in
New York into tar...
