1) You can't accurately date an object by its surroundings. I can bury a
laptop computer in the mud in a 2 million year old cave, but that
doesn't make the laptop 2 million years old.
2) Nature is very ingenious when it comes to weathering patterns. I have
no doubt the fellow with the double soled print was convinced that is
what it was. Just as I was convinced as a child that crinoid segments
were petrified Cheerios. One learns to interpret more correctly as one
becomes educated.
3) Pranksters are not a new thing. There were any number of natural
history based deliberate hoaxes in the 1800s. The history of geology,
archeology and anthropology are full of them, not just modern day crop
circlers.
4)Dates on the rock can be wrong, too, and sometimes geology does
proceed by catastrophism, not gradualism.
5) You did not note the size of the alleged spheres. The NG for a while
earlier this year was taken over by the Martian hematite spheres, and
if someone were not a geologist, he/she might think they were actually
Martian ball bearings, and not a natural occurence.
6) Never underestimate the cunning of a well prepared and devious
deceiver/promoter.
