Is it possible that some fluid, water mainly, be trapped in a porous
zone of a fault, then be heated by geothermal flux and evacuates
suddenly, triggering a displacement of rocks ?
Any water exposed to heat turns to steam. The steam will then escape
through any porousity available. Steam isn't strong enough to cause
emplaced rock to move much. Take for example Yellowstone gyser basin.
As groundwater is heated and reaches high enough temperature and
pressure it escapes to the surface.
Keep in mind that groundwater usually encounters a high temperature
area not the other way around. Any heat underground is caused by magma
and therefore a more gradual process than flash heating that your water
drop encountered.
That would explain why some micro-earthquake repeat at regular
intervals
of time, would not it ?
That would also explain why injecting water triggers earthquakes in
tectonically stable regions.
Evidence please.
That would also explain why there are some earthquakes in regions where
there is no compressive nor shear stress...
It may not be evident but there is compressive and shear stress the
crust over. Earthquakes that occur in areas of perceived stability are
caused by the build up of stress. It takes longer to overcome the rock
that is less broken than in areas that are already faulted.
Hope this helps,
Andy
