So you are saying that professionals don't use Kentucky's FREE GIS service? If
you believe that, I've got some swampland in Florida I can sell you for a song.

Well, the beauty about Kentucky's GIS service is that you don't have to "search"
for any map, not in the sense that you refer to. You browse the master map, and
then choose the map you need. For instance, if you need a GQ map, and the area
you are interested in is in northern kentucky, you choose the northern region:
http://kymartian.ky.gov/gqmaps/
http://kymartian.ky.gov/gqmaps/gqnorth.html
If you know the county, say Boone county, you click on the quadrant that
includes that county:
http://kymartian.ky.gov/gqmaps/gqnorth.html
If you are interested in a quadrangle for Independence, Kentucky, you would
select C41, and you can either open it in the browser or download it. The
download contains the entire map (including the legend), not a little tiny piece
of it that doesn't include the legend or even the northings and eastings. It is
that easy. And once you've downloaded it, you can zoom in or out, and even
select the portion that you need for printing. I've used them many times.
Unfortunately, the entire U.S. is not mapped geologically at the 7.5 minute
scale. However, for those that are, you can go to the U.S.G.S web site to get
GQ maps in those areas for which there is coverage:
http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/ILdev/
And for Kentucky, there is the same set up as for GQ maps:
http://kymartian.ky.gov/krgmaps/index.html
If I want to find a GQ map of Hardinsburg (Breckenridge County), I simply click
on the tell city quadrant:
http://kymartian.ky.gov/krgmaps/tel/index.html
and then select "Hardinsburg". In this case, the map is a TIF file, so it can
be opened in Photoshop, Corel Photopaint, or any other similar program, and
edited, trimmed, and easily inserted in a report.

Of course. But if you are a professional, you certainly aren't as likely to go
searching for a map of a place that you have no idea where it is located. In
fact, most professionals (especially geologists) go for specific maps of
specific areas that they are studying, so they almost certainly know the
location. That being the case, my examples above shows clearly that it can be
done in three clicks on the Kentucky site, not four. Now I know you are running
a commercial venture, and you'd rather that people use your site than a free
one. I for one don't see the need for professionals to use it as often, since
most, like me would simple go to a free site, like the kentucky site, and
download the entire map, which is much more useful for our purposes. And
speaking of taxpayers, since we've already paid for these maps, so why in the
hell should we pay for them again?

That's was true then. It's not true anymore.
