Speaking of wood preservation in swamps...
I was on a barge rig some years ago drilling a hole for a 24" conductor
pipe from about 250' to about 4000 feet in the south Louisana swamps.
Somewhere near bottom the returns brought up a piece of Cypress about
as big as my arm. It was very well preserved with rings and bark.
I gave it to the driller who took it home.
My age guess was late Pleistocene.
