Gerald & Tim,
I think you'll find (steering clear of the majority of 1st year level
uni textbooks that is - they haven't seem to have caught up either)
it is widely accepted that the pull of the descending slab is the major
(but not the only) driving force in plate tectonics. I was not arguing
what causes the convection, only that plate movement is not primarily
driven by it.
