Wakulla (Florida) Volcano

Another thread discussed a "hot Spot" near Santa Barbara, CA where the
ground was hot and smoking. I compared it to the legend of the Wakulla
Volcano in Florida but I misremembered the chronology. It happened in
the late 1800s. A search on "Wakulla Volcano" will find some hits and
descriptions. As I am very familiar with the area in question (having
spent most of my childhood exploring it), I can also suggest that it
was probably a deep peat deposit burning. The area does seem very
weird with numerous sinks, streams that rise and sink within a few tens
of meters, limestone boulders and jungle-like growth with so many water
moccasin snakes and alligators to make anybody hesitant to enter. It
is just the sort of place that would give rise to legends.
