Re: Fire-sparking hot spot



Here in N. Fl, in the early 1800s, there were reports of smoke
consistently emanating from a single area roughly located in what is
now east Wakulla or west Jefferson county near the Aucilla River. It
could be seen from the Gulf of Mexico and from some buildings in
Tallahassee. There were some reports of someone encountering a similar
hot spot. Theories ranged from a volcano (impossible considering Fl
geology) to indians to burning peat. The area in which it was seen is
swampy and riddled with limestone sinkholes. After the Civil War, it
was not seen again. Probably just burning peat in a few dry years.
