I don't know if the terminology applies to landslides, but I've
seen "shallow avalanche" apply to an avalanche which doesn't penetrate
the full thickness of the snow cover, and "deep" or "full-thickness"
avalanches for ones that penetrate to the underlying talus, rock or ice
(and hence the material in the avalanche contains bigger lumps). The
same distinction could be stretched to landslides in general, but it
would be a pretty fuzzy distinction.
