Thanks for your thorough description. Regardless of the particular
discipline being discussed, I personally exclude amateurs for my
purposes. I wouldn't argue with anyone who prefers to include them
because that doesn't, IMO, classify as an earth shattering
differentiation. There are actually two things to consider. Those
to include, and equally important, those to exclude.

I guess the core issues are how good an individual's knowledge is,
and how they conduct themselves. I don't quite know how to describe
those I exclude because their grasp of essential basics is obviously
so terribly deficient that most of what they offer doesn't rise to
just being wrong. Unfortunately we see an awful lot of that on usenet.

Sometimes individuals qualify based on educational criteria alone,
but fail significantly in other very important ways. The name George
Hammond springs to mind as an example. I'm sure anyone with more
than a few months of usenet experience has their own example in
mind.

Given his wide ranging interests, how would folks here classify
Benjamin Franklin? Scientist? Or not?
