You could go to the desert and dig all the silica sand that one wanted,
except that one would have to watch out for desert tortoises, and not run
over them or step on them or disturb them in any way, or face criminal
prosecution, fines and imprisonment. The BLM owns most of the sand in
California, and they wont let you have any. Go to arizona, they will let
you dig all the sand you want for personal use. California Tree huggers
are afraid some worthless critter might get disturbed though.
Most silica sand in the desert I've seen analysis on can run from 70% SiO2
to 90% SiO2, and I actually saw some from one of the top field geologists in
the state, that he said ran 97% SiO2, right out of the ground. He was
looking for a property for a glass manufacturer, and I think he found it.
