Re: Mine Safety Subordinated to Mining Company Interests

I'd still like to know why [non-exploding] mine dark is deemed different than cave dark. I've been in both, and haven't noticed anything except the mine dark smells rustier. The Anfo laced room I was in at the time (it wasn't wired yet) stank like damp to dry bat guano. The dripping water, and creaky, shifting rocks weren't hardly different at all. And, if you've ever been squeezed like a salamander belly to back in a cave passage and had a jeep tram 30 ft directly overhead (also underground) engage its engine so that you both heard it and felt the transmitted vibration, it's just as scary as that 15 ton remote controlled loader chomping at the wall over the berm...or the time I woke in a cave, to hear a boulder let loose from the ceiling, and bounce down the passage in a series of echoed rumbles.

Jo,

In the situations you describe, where there is no light source, or the light source is off or extinguished, mine dark and cave dark would be the same. I would not deem them different. Total darkness is total darkness.

I was addressing those times when a person has a light source that is producing light, and visibility is zero. Usually, if that occurs in a mine, the problem creating the zero visibility will most likely be having some immediate impact upon a persons longevity.

thanks for the clarification, Senor DQ. The same thing happens in 'bubble silting' in cave or wreck diving. Which is why divers lay lines with directional arrows pointed out. And why I have never been tempted to cave dive. I understand such arrows or markers are not practical in a mine, and wasn't suggesting that it is necessary there. I did wonder why in the lead mines, where the transport is by regular trucks and not railed mancars didn't have any markers at adit intersections, but figured navigation was done like dry cavers', who rarely use cairns, or string, but do occasionally use flagging tape in the squirrelly bits. I guess if you memorize the walls, and then can't see them, there is a problem.
best wishes,
Jo
