I think the meaning of evolution could be clarified.
People say evolution is not real, I must ask, which kind of evolution
isn't real. I believe my pen evolved, I know my PC is the product of
evolution, it evolved starting with the primative calculator to what it
is today and it will go on evolving until taken over by a superior kind
of device. Then it will become extinct.
To my way of thinking Darwins evolution should always be termed 'lifes
evolution' as it has nothing to do with the evolution of the Earth or of
the Universe. I find it easy to believe that the Universe has always been
in existance and is just constantly changing over the trillions of years.
Then I don't need to get confused when answering the question "What was
there before big bang"
'Lifes evolution' is much more simple for me to comprehend. It starts
with the shale deposits, ( I forget where) where there are thousands of
different, what are they called - err, creatures? species? Oh, tiny life
forms embedded in the slabs. loads and loads of them. Some with 10 heads
others 100s of legs all so different from each other it's unbelievable.
For me this is the crunch bit - 1000s of these tiny life forms are never
ever seen again in any of the other later rock formations. BUT some are!
and these one or two carry on evolving while the rest of the thousands
don't.
One can pass on through the millions of years finding more and more of
past life in the rock strata, tar pits and other unique spots like the
rift valley with Lucy and up to today, but for me the tiny critters in
the shale deposits are the most important. So many 1000s disappear and
just the few reappear, Amazing. John.
Reappear? Are you saying there's a cycle of species? By far, more species
disappear than continue.
Somehow I don't think you're going to change the first choice in the
dictionary of what meaning you find for evolution. Here are a couple words
for you to consider.
phylogeny
The sequence of events involved in the evolutionary development of a species
or taxonomic group of organisms
Ontogeny
The origin and development of an individual organism from embryo to adult.
Also called ontogenesis
