I'm wondering if anyone has ever considered that the continents may
have formed as a moon that collided with Earth. Maybe even a water
strewn comet could have this effect.
This would be consistent with their having been one continent that is
drifting apart.
Perhaps also the fossil fuel deposits are consistent with this theory.
I am not a geologist.
I just thought I'd see if anyone has investigated this and if not what
you think of it.

Since the cores of the continents are very old, and there is ample evidence
of the continents coming together on more than one ocassion spread out over
a long period of time, I think you can rule out the possibility of an
impact origin for the continents.
