Aidan,
Yes there are "problems" in our school systems and the methods used to test
knowledge. However, we have to remember that the vast majority of
educational institutions are geared towards creating "Good Employees", the
worker bees. Being on time and following instructions as well as fair hand-
eye coordination being the highest priorities. Most students will end up
here (as did your butcher friend). Don't get me wrong, a person can make
fair wages being a worker bee.
And the remaining few institutions? They are filled with trust fund babies,
students sent there by parents that have plans for them to RUN THE FAMILY
BUSINESS. They are trained to make decisions rather than work for someone
else. SO, here is an example:
Years ago a fast food chain hired a bean counter to find out where they were
losing money. (There was a small unaccounted for loss in profits). So, after
some study the bean counter found that most of the employees were grabbing
a few fries (chips), eating a sandwich, drinking a soft drink a la cart.
and not paying. in other words, stealing food and eating into the profits.
Those are the worker bees trained in public schools.
The decision makers trained in private schools decided to factor in the loss
rather than fire the bad boys and girls and under go the costs of rehiring
and retraining new bad boys and girls.
You do the best you can, but there are times when you have to factor in
ignorance into your decision making process. Who will make money from
creating these surveys? Who will make money as a result of these surveys?
