Much of my youth was misspent either looking at a globe for hours on end or
"going at myself." I found geography interesting in and of itself since it
is closely tied to world economics and, of course, history.
In the US, most kids get some geography in grade school and middle school,
bu little throughout high school. Even in the better schools, the focus is
on the subjects that are college preparatory, as well as Advance Placement
courses. So geography and courses that would tend to teach geography are
ignored.
One of the other aspects of this basic ignorance is America's lack of
interest in the rest of the world. Since we are so erorcentric, there is
some interest in Europe, but that is reall as far as it goes.
