water depth of 3km or so, minimum? That's enough to absorb all light
that human eyes are sensitive.
Where's that paper about the shrimp that has conventional (for an
arthropod) eyes when it's planktonic in the photic zone, but which
dismantles those eyes at a late moult, builds a different set of
IR-sensitive eyes, and goes wandering off into the depths in search of a
black (but IR-bright!) smoker to settle down for a sessile adulthood. I
always thought that would be a nice one for prodding Creationists with.
