I actaully felt this earthquake in Tallahassee, FL . It is the first I
have ever felt and I knew what it was but was so surprised to feel such
in Florida that I almost got on the computer to check seismology
stations but we were int he middle of a major thunderstorm so I didnt.
It appears that it occurred where the bottom of the gulf drops off from
being fairly shallow to being very deep. However, the slope at this
region is not nearly as steep at most other parts of the drop-off
around the Gulf so a slide shouldnt have caused such a ruckus. Any
ideas?
Located: 26.327°N, 86.571°W That would put it in the middle of the basin
about half way between the Florida block and the Yucatan platform. I
thought nothing particularly seismic was supposed to be happening out there.
Earthquakes can (and do, on occasion) happen anywhere. Look up "New
Madrid" in Google. All the references are about a big earthquake...
