Dilettante's guide?

I would like to drive to places where I can see some of the more interesting
rock formations that I have read about. But, when I get there, I want to
know what I'm looking at. Does anyone know of a guide for amateurs that
would help me?

Something like John McPhee's descriptions, with exact location descriptions
would be great.
