Hello all. Is there some sort of small book that could be used by
non-geologists on family outings to identify rocks? The sort of thing I
imagine would be a small book you could carry with you, and if you find
a rock or rock formation, you could follow some sort of checklist or
branching path to find out what it is and learn something about it. A
book suitable for use while accompanying a seven year old would be best.
I live in the East Midlands of the UK, in case this makes a difference.
DK had several guide-book like books for Rocks & Minerals. The smallest
one was a pocketbook sized one, but I don't know whether that is still
available. Rocks and Minerals (Handbooks) by Chris Pellant (Paperback)
2000 edition from DK is quite good and can be carried in a coat pocket.
There are larger books like Illustrated Encyclopedia of Rocks & Minerals
by Kourimsky & The Practical Encyclopedia of Rocks and Minerals by
Farndon that are quite detailed with lots of illustrations. Do a search
in Amazon for rocks & minerals. You will see a good number of them.
