Hello all. Is there some sort of small book that could be used by
non-geologists on family outings to identify rocks? The sort of thing I
imagine would be a small book you could carry with you, and if you find
a rock or rock formation, you could follow some sort of checklist or
branching path to find out what it is and learn something about it. A
book suitable for use while accompanying a seven year old would be
best.
I live in the East Midlands of the UK, in case this makes a difference.
Identifying small rocks is a very laudable enterprise without which
(given the lipservice to geology by the denizens here) they would
probably never be reunited with their parents. First, however, before
imposing any intrusion on their privacy you must discern whether or not
they are indeed lost, ..or lonely, as many rocks are really quite happy
where and as they are, and may not wish to be 'tagged'. Some may even
consider respite from parental abuse as uplifting (....)
It's really good to see there are people who *CARE*, but it should be
remembered there must be some concession to finer feelings when it
comes to infringing anonymity... And remember, ..in most states in
America (Britain usually lags a little behind in this regard concerning
the rights of rocks) roadside rocks are a protected species... and
you are simply not **ALLOWED**..
See? (*"Leave our rocks alone"") (*Rights for Rocks*)
However, ..since you live in the East Midlands probably anything goes.
Crush them underfoot if you like..., but don't be surprised if you get
a visit from The Bill... (Whatsisname? ...Eric?) They're pretty
strict when it comes to abuse of all sorts, regardless of council
regulations...
