It's about 10 degrees F outside, so it's about time for a Hawaiian
geology vacation fantasy. Actually, I've never been there, and would like
to start saving towards such a trip.

As I understand it, tourists aren't allowed to wander by themselves out
into the Kilauea active area--that is reasonable. However, is there *any
way* to get even within viewing distance of the active area? Air? Land?
Sea? It would seem a waste to spend multiple thousands of dollars and
only get the same remote picture postcard I could get from here in
Frostbite Falls. I don't need to melt my shoes in lava, just as
reasonably close as say, to the geysers in Yellowstone.

Major destination would be the Big Island, including lava tube areas. Any
recommendation for other island(s) which are geologically/biologically
interesting? Am also interested in seeing the olivine sands, but what I
know about Hawaii will fill a 5 minute lecture. Not interested in the
'high life'-- would rather stay at a cheap motel, and travel by
ourselves, though would be open to organized tours, if they can get us
where unchaperoned tourists aren't allowed.

Ok, let the mental luau begin!

Frostbibe falls, eh? Perhaps if you could round up some upsidasium, you
could float across the lava fields with impunity! lol
