Hi folks:
With no warning that I was aware of, UBC has decided to terminate
their newsserver, suggesting that there are adequate free servers
to be found which will suffice for those wishing to read usenet,
though not providing any recommendation, just a pointer to a list
of sites. I am currently trying one, freenews.netfront.net, so
this is also a posting test,
Sorry, ignore this - I can't cancel it. This post failed when I
tried to make it last week. I have since found a server that works,
through aioe.org, and today I was just trying to clear the old article,
which kept coming up as "postponed - post this article? y [yYAnq]"
Hitting n or q had no effect, it kept coming back, so I tried A,
and that posted it. If there was a way for tin to let me delete
the article, I never found it...
Found myself in the same boat about three years ago, finally went with
groups.google.com
As this thread was resurrected, I thought it might be useful to
some to hear how I've been faring, since my 15 year dependable
feed is gone...
Here is a list, quite old now
Access for many allows text to be both read and to post, a few even
carry binary content, but are not reliable
[snip list]
Some of those are gone, some are very limited grouplist. I used
the server list here initially:
http://services.triceron.com/usenet/srvlist.php
which led me to aioe.org, which worked quite well for me for about
a week and a half, but dropped out last friday night, and didn't
appear when I tried again monday, so I have shifted now to
"albasani.net", which curiously doesn't show on that list.
I found it by drifting through alt.free.newsservers last week.
That has given me some alternative options. Albasani isn't
as fast nor as full a feed as aieo, but hopefully it may
prove to be more reliable. It doesn't carry any binaries,
but I have no interest in those so that's OK. It does require
a contact with the admin who provides a free acct name and
password. It also seems to attach my mail address to the "sender"
header, which is a drag, but then UBC used to do the same thing.
Anyway, I would never go to google, as I couldn't put up with
the mouse-and-derranged-graphical interface. With a real NNTP
server I can continue to use tin, and generate sensible posts.
I hope though that I won't find myself losing connectivity on
a regular basis and shifting about through several servers;
the already-read-article lists are server-centred, so each time
I shift I lose a record of what I've seen.
Note also, on the list I linked, all of those are supposed to
provide a free server and allow posting, but many of them
don't, and some are like albasani, you have to find their
website and register yourself for an account before you can
connect; or in some cases you need to register to be able
to post.
