Why *ISN'T* everything flat?
Why isn't the universe a smooth soup of energy?
With the second law and all?
Why is there gravity?
Why is there order, the opposite of your 'flat'
random smooth soup of eroded particles?
And if you think mountains are hard to explain, when
it seems all the universe conspires to destroy
them, why is there even higher levels
of order such as life?
Why does the universe ...start off....'flat' and end
up with ever grander ordered galaxies and life forms?
It's really quite simple.
There are only two fundamental forces in the universe.
But they aren't really forces, they are tendencies or
behaviors.
One is a force that tends to coalesce, like gravity.
The other is a force or behavior that tends to
expand, like cosmic expansion.
Or think of them as condensation and evaporation.
When the two great tendencies are interacting with
each other in a balanced way so that one can't
tell which-is-which. So that one can't tell which
of the two forces dominates the system....
.....guess what happens?
Like magic, the system begins to organize, order
spontaneously increases. And following a power law
distribution of creative events. Which is the same
law that earthquakes follow. You geologists had
better know what a power law is. As it applies
to the universe and life as well.
When gravity and cosmic expansion are at an
unstable equilibrium with each other we get
a universe. When the same is true for
condensation and evaporation we get a cloud.
Forces that tend to coalesce also behave as
simplifying tendencies. Or forces that follow simple
fixed rules of operation.
Forces that tend to expand also behave as complicating
tendencies such as a gas or following random rules.
Condensing vs evaporating
Simplifying vs complicating
Fixed vs random
Rule of law vs freedom yields a society
Genetics vs mutation in balance yields natural selection.
.....and living order.
Knowlege vs imagination (simple v random)
.........yields ideas.
Static attractor vs chaotic attractor
.....yields the dynamic attractor of fluids and art.
So with the earth it must be also.
Gradual change vs catastrophic change
.....yields mountains.
Plate tectonics is only half the picture.
The other half is sudden large scale
change that, just like life I bet, follows a
power law distribution.
Why do you think they can't model the shape
and size of the continents more than a couple
hundred million years? Because, like an
earthquake, something dramatic happens
to shuffle the deck and change everything
around. You can't extrapolate beyond a
critical point. Anymore than you can
extrapolate through the big bang.
The world isn't flat because the universe tends
to balance these two great forces, like the
second law tends to smooth out. The universe
inherently creates order from disorder.
Creation, whether in mountains, or life, is a fundamental
property of the universe.
The only one.
