In short, since water has viscosity[1], the high tide points are not exactly opposite the moon, but lag back a significant amount. It turns out that that lag in turn causes a minute gravitational pull on the moon which slows it down in its orbit, sending it away.
Duh - me ignorant enjinear. Does not the Earth rotate faster than the Moon's orbital period ? So that the high tide points LEAD ? So that the minute pull SPEEDS it, sending it away ? And slows the Earth's rotation, making the day longer ?
CONSERVE MOMENTUM - it's de law.
