far north-east of Siberia and the far west of Alaska is (as well as what
happens under the Bering Straits). There isn't a consensus. At least one
reconstruction that I saw being aired at a recent conference on
hydrocarbon prospectivity (the proceedings are in press) actually had
the western boundary of the Americna plate running along the Cherskogo
mountains. Others consider this "Chukchi" Plate a distinct plate with
obscure (aseismic) boundaries with both the American and Eurasian
Plates. Accommodating this plate/ plate fragment in Arctic
reconstructions is ... difficult. A map of earthquakes shows a distinct
extension of the seismicity of the Arctic (Gaskell) Ridge under this
region. (Do a search for earthquakes at the USGS earthquake centre
produces this plot (after a time): http://preview.tinyurl.com/2flwpr or

The area is prospective for hydrocarbons. There are signs of
natural oil slicks as well as detectable plumes of methane indicating
outgassing. But getting to it, and getting it to market, is going to be
real fun! There's a total of about 7000km of seismic for the entire
region, and that doesn't go beyond 3 seconds TWT.
