..And what is the unpalatable fact?

NooooooOOO Subduction!

Does anybody know *anywhere* where subduction really happens?

How about around most of the Pacific for starters.
But then you knew that.

I know it *used to be* called subduction, round the eastern side at
any rate, but no longer since everybody is now taking all their
clothes off and calling it "overriding". And those pikers only going
half way are calling it "Flat Subduction", which isn't subduction at
all.

You?

The only people I've ever called it overriding are you EEers (AFAIK).
Still - it's a relative term. Subduction is the same thing as overriding.
The lower (always oceanic) plate subducts, the upper (sometimes continental,
sometimes oceanic) plate overrides.

And I think you misunderstand the term "flat subduction". "Flat" and
"steep"
are used in a relative sense. The "angle of the dangle" is determined by
the balance
between plate buoyancy and convergence rate, and in turn determines whether
the
upper plate in under compression (orogeny) or extension (rollback).

Which is by way of saying what, exactly? That there are no
earthquakes on this 'flat zone' - no structure defining its dip? Only
"convergence rate" (read GPS) and "plate buoyancy"? How is plate
buoyancy determined if there are no travel times from earthquakes to
determine density?

Come clean, Small Gringo, .. We're talking *EARTHQUAKES* determining
STRUCTURE, not earthquakes determining travel times determining
DENSITY determining convection.

Structure. Rates of deformation/ failure/ brittleness. Not density
as an expression of heat.
