And of course, the only proper response would have been, "Your tale,
sir, would cure deafness." (Shakespeare, "The Tempest")
I wonder what is the oldest direct evidence of tropical storms in the
geologic record known today. The hapless stromatolite I saw had lived
some time in the Ordovician, the early Ordovician, I think.

"What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time?"
-- W. Shakespeare, "The Tempest"
Mr. Shakespeare also apparently invented, or foresaw, Usenet and some
other parts of today's Internet, in this play: "A kind of excellent
dumb discourse." We sorely need his style of flaming today: "Thou
deboshed fish thou." And his sense of wonder: "How many goodly
creatures are there here! How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world,
That has such people in't!"
Unfortunately, if anyone spoke to the general public using Shakespeare's
Literary Genius (Iambic Pentameter and all), it would fall upon deaf ears,
for in a room of a hundred, only one or two would even comprehend the
message he conveyed (or attempted to convey).
Modern education, the dumbing down of students?
Or can we blame rap music?
How about Al Gores favorite, "It is caused by global warming?"
I'm still looking for my 'pound of flesh' in that tangled web we weave.
Communication is about conveying information to be actually understood by
other parties. Unfortunately, the other parties may not be too bright, so
the method used must reflect that to be successful. The US Military wrote
their technical manuals (how to fire guided missles) in language anyone
with an 8th grade education could understand. This always caused me to ask
"do we really want someone with a 8th grade education to be firing missles?"
No one ever answered my question, so I gave up asking it.
