Core samples taken 2 miles deep reveal that the answer to having plates slip past one another without a quake may be baby powder.
Are we meant to assume they mean talc? It's not mentioned anywhere in the article
other than the inference in the title.
cheers

I agree -- it's a dumb headline with no secondary reference. And most baby powder these days (post WR Grace) is cornstarch.

Just looked at the label of the Johnsons "Baby Powder" in our bathroom and
the ingredients are listed as talc and "fragrance". I would have thought that
cornstarch would have promoted "bug" growth - e.g yeast infections etc.

They must be exporting the stuff. I went and looked at my bottle of stinky powder (also J&J) and it says cornstarch, sodium bicarbonate, tri-calcium phosphate [yum] talc,(as anti-caking agent)fragrance and maltodextrin. Maltodextrin? Sugar? Like Monty Python said: "it idn't got but a little talc in it."

BTW who is WR Grace?
Well, this is the popular view: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W.R._Grace_and_Company

They are known in the US for a trichlorethylene controversy in Woburn, Massachusetts(May or may not have actually been the guilty party) and for the shutdown of their Libby Montana vermiculite plant after it was 'discovered' that vermiculite had an asbestos component.

I don't have an ax to grind either way --

Here is a link to the big Crayola scandal:

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/fisc30.shtml

The trouble with the media and the people here is 'they don't get the details'. They wouldn't know the difference between chrysotile and crocidolite if it were in their tea. They hear that fibrous asbestos is dangerous (true) and then they scream that solid shingles and brake pads containg asbestos are the downfall of civilization.

I operate on the idea that too much of ANYTHING is bad for you. *|:-) Even eating crayons.

As one youngster said to me a few years ago "they make powder out of babies??".
cheers
