Hello,
On a recent trip to Death Valley we encountered some interesting
boulders that we are curious about. They look a bit like volcanic
bombs but are waaaay too big:

Very distinctive "onion-layers" weathering pattern, as you can see.
Do you have any idea what is this? Location is 36°22'28.85"N,
117°17'7.18"W.

Not volcanic bombs.
The boulders exhibit onion skin weathering - hot, cold, freeze, etc.
Thermal expansion/contraction.
What they are made of I can't tell.
The geology of Death Valley is varied.
They could be granitic, basic, diorite, dolomite, sandstone, etc.
The rock just in front of the boulder has brownish basaltic weathering.
The boulders them selves show the typical whiteish basaltic weathering.
The rock closest to the camera looks almost vuggy (basaltic).
But they could just as easily be dolomite.
