Re: Geologicpedia

Thanks for your comments, Stuart.

I don't think we're that far apart on this one. The difference I see between a Linux development group and a wide open wiki is that in order to make any meaningful contribution to Linux one has to have a basic familiarity with computer programming, and Linux syntax to even enter the conversation on Linux. However, any fool with a keyboard and an opinion can contribute to most wikis.

The Internet enables anyone to be their own publisher. Unfortunately, very few people have the tools or self-discipline to be their own editor as well. Obviously the Conservapedia example you gave is 'edited' after a fashion, in a certain direction. Once control or moderation is put onto a wiki, it may still be an even more useful creation, but something of its essential "wiki-ness" (good info drives out bad info)is lost. Sort of like moderated Usenet.

I wish the original poster well. I know this opinion flies in the face of good scientific protocol, in that who does an experiment shouldn't matter, but the results do-- the older I get, and the more the world fills up with dreck, the more I want to know what the human credentials are behind info I find on the Net. It's easier to find that out from a private website, or a single person blog, or info put out there by a government, school or company than a wiki.

happy holidays to you,
Jo
