Good place to ask historical geology questions?

I live in upstate NY on the VT border, at the southern tip of Lake
Champlain. There is a lot of interesting geology in my area from what I've
read (and learned in a 101-level hist. geology class I took many years ago).
Every so often, I come across something geologic that really arouses my
curiosity. With other subjects, I can usually find a web forum site where I
can post a photo and ask a layman's question. I can't seem to find a
historical geology web forum. :-)
I was out grouse hunting this week and stumbled on an interesting exposed
layer that looks very much like a fossilized mat of vegetation. I think my
locale was once the shorline of Lake Vermont in I took a couple of photos
and was hoping to find more information.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
