I live in upstate NY on the VT border, at the southern tip of Lake

read (and learned in a 101-level hist. geology class I took many years ago).
Every so often, I come across something geologic that really arouses my
curiosity. With other subjects, I can usually find a web forum site where I
can post a photo and ask a layman's question. I can't seem to find a
historical geology web forum. :-)
I was out grouse hunting this week and stumbled on an interesting exposed
layer that looks very much like a fossilized mat of vegetation. I think my
locale was once the shorline of Lake Vermont in I took a couple of photos
and was hoping to find more information.
Any suggestions?

Upstate geology is very complex, but there is limestone (ls) in the area
so it is possible that you have found an algal mat, bioherm, coral, etc.
Go here and look at the geomap and legend.
Use two windows so you can keep each open to go back and forth.
