I live in upstate NY on the VT border, at the southern tip of Lake

read (and learned in a 101-level hist. geology class I took many years ago).
Every so often, I come across something geologic that really arouses my
curiosity. With other subjects, I can usually find a web forum site where I
can post a photo and ask a layman's question. I can't seem to find a
historical geology web forum. :-)
I was out grouse hunting this week and stumbled on an interesting exposed
layer that looks very much like a fossilized mat of vegetation. I think my
locale was once the shorline of Lake Vermont in I took a couple of photos
and was hoping to find more information.
Any suggestions?

Is there a "rockhound" club where you live, or in a nearby city?
Typically those clubs have several working geologists in their
membership, as well as others very knowledgeable in the field. The
clubs also usually organize field trips to interesting sites, some of
which you can't get on without permission. Take a look at
memphisgeology.org to get an idea of the scope of activities of these
clubs (this club is a long way from where you live, but still . . .).
