I'm wondering if anyone on this newsgroup can help me to identify the
below fossil, which I found on the surface in south Louisiana:

I at first thought it was a crinoid, but I find it's too large to
correspond to most descriptions of crinoids.
Could it be coral?

My initial reaction is that it is a rock with a little pocket of, perhaps,
calcite crystals in the
middle cavity. See if it bubbles in response to vinegar placed in the center
and away from it.
Note the concentric lines in the tan portion indicative of concretionary
growth.
If there is a break somewhere not visible in the specimen and not occluded
with crystallization--or if you a willing to make one--look for any evidence
of porous cell
structure which would support the idea of a fossil.
