I'm wondering if anyone on this newsgroup can help me to identify the
below fossil, which I found on the surface in south Louisiana:

I at first thought it was a crinoid, but I find it's too large to
correspond to most descriptions of crinoids.
Could it be coral?

Most likely it is a crinoid columnal. Paleozoic specimens (particularly
from the Mississippian) can get pretty big. I've collected specimens that
were over an inch in diameter. The only question in my mind is what
formation this came from. I'm not that familiar with the geology of
Louisiana, so I can't tell you if Paleozoic crinoid fauna occur there. You
don't mention anything about the area where you found it, but I have found
crinoid stems in rip raff along railroad tracks, so it could be out of
place.
