High temperatures and heavy rain around the world (BBC, 15/06)

Temperatures in the south of the UK continue to soar into the high 20s
Celsius today, but the change to cooler conditions have already started to
push down across the north of Scotland, accompanied by some rain. By the end
of the week we will all notice a drop in temperature. For example, today in
London we are expecting a maximum temperature of 28C (82F), but by Thursday
that will be closer to 19C (66F). But there will not be much evidence of
rain in the far south, at best here we can expect some showers. Not good
news for gardeners or farmers.

Talking of high temperatures, anyone watching Euro 2004 will have noticed
how hot it has been in Lisbon of late. Yesterday the temperature reached 34C
(93F) - a good 10C above average for the time of year. The heatwave
continues across Central Europe with a lot of warm and sunny weather, but
with plentiful thunderstorms during the day.

Rain has proved a problem in other parts of the world.

Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh, and neighbouring Teknaf coastlines, were hit by a
storm over the weekend. Spawned by a monsoon depression in the Bay of
Bengal, waves up to 12 metres (40 feet) high and wind gusts up to 50
kilometres (30 miles) per hour were reported to have
lashed the area. Sadly, this is still resulting in a lot of fatalites.

Also over the weekend, an area of cloud and thunderstorms over the
northwestern Caribbean Sea and southeastern Gulf of Mexico was being closely
watched by the National Hurricane Centre in Miami. It looked like it may
have had the potential to develop into a tropical depression, although
fortunately it didn't. But in the River Ridge area of Louisiana on Monday,
steady rain led to disruption with streets being flooded, leaving roadways
looking more like a river. One flood victim was quoted as saying that the
water in her neighbourhood rose so quickly she was 'forced to plan her day
around the heavy rain if she wanted to get home safely'.
