I don't know about western Canada, but in general I'd say the job
market is fair. Outside of working for a government (Environment
Canada or the NWS in the U.S.), you're looking at working for a
private firm. Many of them are small, although larger weather
forecasting companies have come into existence during my career,
as weather has become more important. Energy companies also
employ meteorologists, and weather is also becoming an important
factor in the stock market. The trouble is that the jobs may
not be where you want to live. If you're a plumber or something
like that, in principle you can find a job almost anywhere.
Meteorologists are more restricted.
IMO the sweet spot education-wise is a Masters degree. A lot of
employers want someone with more knowledge than a Bachelors degree
but don't want to pay the freight for someone with a PH.D. I'd
encourage you to get a good grounding in statistics and computer
programming during your studies, too.
Cheers,
Russell
