I guess the scenario which you describe is not really what you
encounter "in average" for the 700(?) soundings during a year.

Since you seem to work with balloon soundings: Are the data which you
receive from the sonde not time stamped? Could it be that this
information is removed before the data are made publicly available?

In case the time information is really not available: May be you have
gained some experience on the time you normally would expect between
launching of the ballon until it bursts e.g. around 20km or 30km
height. This already would give an idea on the average ascent rate. Or,
do you just estimate the time span using the 4 to 5 m/s?
