Is it really the first day of spring today?

There are of course people proclaiming that today is the first day of Spring.
But in terms of sunlight, it is the exact MIDDLE of spring.
And do temperature records back up this silly definition of the seasons? No.
Can someone explain why the MID summer solstice is regarded as the START of summer by so many people.
