thunder length?

Hi, I don't know if this is the right place where to ask this question: if
it isn't, then forgive me.
A couple of hours ago we had a thunderstorm, and I was awakened by a strange
sound, very similar to a thunder, but that seemed to have no end. My mother
was awakened by it some minutes later. This noise lasted at least 15/20
minutes, but I don't know when it actually started. None of use ever heard a
so long thunder.
My question is: what exactly was that? How can a thunder last so much?
