In the early 80s I built a Heathkit ID-4001 weather station which I have
been very happy with, and which doesn't owe me a thing. It is however
getting a little long in the tooth, and the newer ones seem to have a
lot more bells and whistles. Recently the CPU was zapped by a pulse
from a nearby lightning strike and it is out of service. I could
replace the CPU with a CPU from a third party source, but I did that
several years ago after an earlier strike, and it modified the way data
was stored and presented. I am sure the author of the new programming
thought the changes were improvements, but I am a traditionalist.
In any case, I think rather than repairing it this time, I will replace
it. What I am looking for is a weather station with the following
characteristics.
1. LCD or LED display where the data readouts can be easily read from
about 15-20 feet way.
2. Wired sensor inputs. (I am looking for near real time readings)
3. Temperature sensor remote from the anemometer (I don't feel radiation
shields work all that well in direct sunlight).
4. Adequate lightning protection so that the sensors wires are not
susceptible to induced spikes from nearby lightning strikes.
Under the nice to have, but not required are:
1. Computer interface.
2. Calibration procedures and adjustments, including slope as well as
intercept for the temperature sensor. (I really liked the calibration
procedure of the ID-4001 with the original CPU. It was tedious and
lengthy, but when done carefully, I at least felt the readings were
accurate when it was completed.)
Price is always a consideration but I don't expect what I want to be
free, just fairly priced.
I have used a search engine, and there are lot of stations out there.
The hard part is knowing which ones really live up to the hype, and are
accurate and reliable. I have also looked at a lot of previous group
postings, and they all seem to be at least a year to two old, and things
do change.
If you have any experience with units that are currently available, good
or bad, and that at least sort of match what I am looking for, I would
welcome your comments.
