Just wondering if anyone has solid clue that this winter will be
cooler or warmer than in last year?
Thank you very much,
David
Depends on where you live. :-)
Here's the link to the CPC seasonal outlooks for the U.S.:http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/multi_season/13_sea...
You can see temperature departures from normal for a number of
locations over the past 365 days athttp://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/global_monitoring/temperature/g...
(don't let the canada at the end deter you, it really covers the
world)
If you have any questions, I can probably help.
Cheers,
Russell
Thanks, Russell, for your great website. I live close to Seattle. just
feel this year is colder than last year. I originally thought that
temperature should be higher and higher each year due to global
warmming .....
Glad to help. Global warming is defined in terms of averages
for the whole planet, and any given location can have weeks,
months, even entire years that will be cooler than similar
previous periods. This image shows that some places (the
blue dots) cooled over the last 25 years of the 20th century
http://www.grida.no/climate/ipcc_tar/slides/05.19.htm
but as you can see the vast majority of locations warmed
during that time.
Even the average temperature for the entire planet is not
expected to go up every single year from the previous year,
for a number of reasons including, but not limited to, large
volcanic eruptions. Pinatubo in the early 1990s caused a
cooling that lasted a couple of years, for instance. But over
periods of decades the trend definitely favors warmer.
Cheers,
Russell
